Reports of a step up in stop and search activity are the direct result of recent high profile stabbings in London. This may be one of the new London Mayor's first directives. Or it could be the law enforcement workers waking up to the fact that they are invisible to the general public.
Replaced by zoom-able, number-plate / face recognition, archivable, digital, high definition, cctv, surveillance. Surveillance is one thing but does it deter the carrying of illegal items whether firearms or knives ?
A visible police presence is more likely to do this as well as preventing anti-social behavior. Has the Council tax increase simply paid for a load of surveillance hardware. Does decreasing street-safety go hand in hand with increased safety for police officers, sitting at a cctv viewing station with a mug of coffee...
